A multi-dimensional outside room

The brief

Our client commissioned us to design a multi-dimensional outdoor space that could be used to entertain guests and provide a relaxing family area with a wood-burning feature. The final design also took into account the need to maximise the privacy of the garden from the surrounding houses.

Challenges

The existing garden was a simple square plot that was overwhelmed by a very large and established conifer hedge. The hedge’s impact made for terrible soil condition, removing much of the natural goodness needed to establish beneficial planting in the area.

The garden also sloped at an angle, which would need to be addressed to accommodate the client’s vision for the space. Access was limited, yet we had to keep several of the existing shrubs while also giving them a new lease of life.

The design solution

To open up the garden, we removed the encroaching conifer hedge and levelled out the sloping lawn to build the multi-dimensional feel of the new design. We brought equipment onto the site after removing the old fencing, and later installed new panels to refresh the garden.

Once the garden was levelled out, we built raised beds, a sunken seating area, and installed a new Douglas fir archway to provide the new, multi-dimensional aspect of the garden design.

To make best use of the existing materials, we repurposed the existing soil as a base for levelling off the newly turfed lawn area. This helped us to create the core of raised beds, which we built using pressure-treated softwood sleepers. We always source the best materials available for our products and aim to reduce and repurpose materials where possible for a more sustainable approach.

Prior to planting a mix of new and existing pink, blue and purple shrubs and fauna, we added additional compost to feed the previously poor soil, bringing new life back into the beds and borders.

The result was a multi-dimensional outdoor room that made it effortless to entertain guests and the family alike. By replacing an unwieldy conifer hedge with new raised beds, we gave the garden a new lease of life and completed it with a spread of colourful plants for maximum enjoyment.
