Low maintenance garden for limited mobility

The brief

Our client commissioned us to create a contemporary, multi-faceted garden design that they could enjoy effortlessly. As they had limited mobility, they needed a low maintenance garden to suit their needs. The project involved building a very easy-to-maintain space where our client could sit out in the sun or be actively involved in its upkeep, tending to herbs and flowerbeds at leisure.

Challenges

This was a west-facing turfed plot with no drainage and we had to bring heavy machinery onto the site and undertake manual lifting work. In addition, a pre-existing decking area impeded our working area and we needed to negotiate around waist-high bannisters and rails.

The design solution

We sourced sympathetic wood and stone was sourced to match the house and existing decking area.

Our initial work focused on creating efficient drainage channels to support a grid design that enabled the owner easy access to a dedicated seating area and planted raised beds created from stone featured on the exterior walls of the property.

We set densely-planted raised beds around the perimeters of the garden with a single stone raised herb bed placed in the middle and easy access around all sides. This enabled the owner to move effortlessly around the space, enjoying its colour and aromas while choosing when to maintain its upkeep throughout the year.

The design also included high-quality artificial turf to give a lawn effect and a new dimension to the plot. For safety, we incorporated non-slip slabs throughout the garden, which we set into the artificial turf. We cut each slab to a uniformed size and layout, once again ensuring easy access for the owner.
