Tranquil formal office courtyard
The brief
Our client commissioned us to design a formal but relaxed courtyard garden that can be looked down upon from all the windows of the rectangular offices. This low maintenance garden needed to be dominated by two large Robinia pseudoacacia trees, incorporate a tranquil water feature and allow for some wild grasses and a few borders.
Challenges
The only real challenge was access. Because the garden had to be constructed in the centre well of the rectangular office building, everything had to be carried or wheeled through the offices by our landscaping team. This included the materials, equipment, trees, plants, and even fish.
The design solution
Rectangular in shape, the garden was framed by a knee-height, grey, limestone wall with slate paving and grey chipping in the ground area. A narrow, canal-shaped rill ran the 30-metre length of the garden, connecting to a larger pond stocked with beautifully-marked koi carp.
Instead of just two trees, we felt eight square-topped purple beech trees would provide a more dramatic backbone and add some height. Among the wild grasses of Mexican feather and stipa golden oats, the plantings of dark, medium-sized phorium black, heuchra palace purple and the brilliant pink and emerald phorium jester, we felt that the purple beech trees presented a wonderful contrast. By including aliums, verbena, aster and morning light (miscanthus sinensis), we added extra texture and interest to the finished garden design.
