L-shaped sloping garden with Cotswold stone

The brief

Our clients commissioned us to transform a narrow, neglected L-shaped garden area into an enjoyable space that oozed character. To maximise the garden’s functionality and to get the most enjoyment from the space, it was essential that we design a space that could be used all year round without the family having to maintain a muddy plot during wet weather.

In addition, the owners wanted to celebrate the sloping aspect of the garden, with raised areas landscaped with cottage garden planting and flora to attract butterflies and insects.

Challenges

Access to the garden was very restrictive and, given the need to bring large quantities of materials onto site and the use of landscaping machinery, this presented a real challenge to the job. The lowest part of the plot was covered with a slab of ready mixed concrete, which we carefully removed.

The design solution

We created a tiered design, offering the family a top, middle and lower area, each with individual character. Cotswold stone, York flagstones and gravel formed the basis of the flow through the garden and ensured it could be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

We also built a new feather edge fence to provide symmetry along the borders of the property. For a heritage appearance, we bordered the space with Cotswold stone raised bed, allowing for the client's desire for densely planted cottage garden areas throughout the garden, featuring mellow pinks, blues and white flowers.

Alongside beautifully scented David Austin shrub roses and rambling roses draped over the south-facing pergola, thyme was set directly into the gravel to provide scent when hit by the sun or trodden underfoot.
